Lawnmower on a Leash

August 10, 2011 by justgathering

I asserted in yesterday’s post that Rockford is not the most runner-friendly city, and then I felt like I had to justify my claim. Well, here’s photographic evidence from my latest run:

To the person who thought it was a good idea to leash up a lawnmower and run the cord across the sidewalk: people walk and run there! I know it doesn’t happen often, but it does happen!

I stopped about an inch short of this cord and thankfully did NOT faceplant into the concrete. I did, however, stick to the actual streets for the duration of my run. Those sidewalks can be treacherous.

Other sights seen on yesterday’s run included Rockford’s Rockmen Guardians.

These things are taller than they look.

And this pretty gazebo near the river, where I stopped for a drink of water.

It was sunny and warm and pretty much perfect. I caught up on my favorite podcasts and enjoyed every single minute.

My miles:

Mile 1 — 8:57

Mile 2 — 9:06

Mile 3 — 9:01

Mile 4 — 9:04

4 miles in 36:08 for a 9:02 average mile. I’ll take it.

I’m hoping to meet up with my old running buddy to catch up over a few miles later today. Til then…

oh man! i hate when suburbs aren’t accommodating to runners :/ that lawnmover on a leash looks like an accident waiting to happen. whenever i visit my family in PA, at least one person (usually a family friend or acquaintance) will pull over and ask me if i need a ride. um, no. i’m running!

Now that is funny. I’ve never been asked that one, but I do get quite a few honks and whistles around these parts…

I lost track a long time ago how many miles I’ve ran in Rockford, but that lawn mower is definitely a gem.

I am always amused at the range of emotions I hear expressed each evening from the Koreans over here. I know running is not the most popular form of exercise in America, but it’s common enough. The forms of exercise on this peninsula can be hilarious. It’s a hoot.

That lawnmower is too funny/ridiculous! At least you have the sidewalks at all though… it’s the thought that counts??
