  1. Labor Day Weekend, Part 1

    September 4, 2011 by justgathering

If I call this post “Part 1,” that means more fun things have to happen, right? Putting it out into the universe. Can’t hurt.

The good times started rolling yesterday afternoon when I met up with an awesome group of people at Keg 229 to surprise Megan for her birthday. (Sofia’s got some spicy pictures of this little get together in her post.)

I had a Captain Lawrence Brown Bird Brown Ale, which was pretty delicious. I think I had another beer after this as well, but I honestly don’t remember. Either I was having too much fun talking to everyone or I didn’t eat enough lunch. Maybe both.

Cupcakes were eaten, drinks were had, hours passed and felt like minutes. Awesome Saturday afternoon.

Relaxing Saturday, chill bar, full pint = happy boyfriend.

The conversation was probably quite hilarious to anyone who was not either a food blogger, a runner, or both. A popular question was, “Did you run long this morning?” I believe Kelly had just finished running 18, and a few others had done very long runs as well.

Me? I was quite happy with yesterday’s 8 miles, actually. Sure, 8 miles isn’t incredibly long compared to the long runs of those training for marathons, but there are two main reasons my long run left me feeling extra good:

    • I had good listening. Last week’s episode of This American Life (Episode 444: Gossip) went straight to the top of my list of favorites. I am not exaggerating: Act 2 features the best contemporary short story I have heard or read in years. Possibly ever.
    • I ran a lot faster than I’d expected. I told myself I’d run 8 miles at a 9:30 pace. When I looked down at my Garmin sometime around mile 3, I was coming in under 9. I tried to slow myself down a bit, but I just kept falling into a faster pace. Since it felt fine, I went with it and ended up doing 8 miles in 1:11:04, an 8:53 average pace.

    The breakdown –>

    Mile 1 — 8:41

    Mile 2 — 8:49

    Mile 3 — 9:04

    Mile 4 — 9:01

    Mile 5 — 8:58

    Mile 6 — 8:55

    Mile 7 — 8:38

    Mile 8 — 8:59

Nice! I didn’t think I could maintain a pace like this for anything over 6 miles, but I finished running and felt absolutely fine. Good sign for the upcoming half.

After Megan’s party, I met up with my friend Joe, who was in town visiting. I lived with Joe in Dublin the second year I was there, and I have amazing memories of cooking and eating with him. Joe really likes food, so I was excited to find somewhere new to enjoy together. (Isn’t it just more fun to eat with people who love food? I think so.)

We were wandering around the Lower East Side looking for something (a) tasty and (b) not too pricey, and the place we stumbled upon was perfect.

Souvlaki GR started as a food truck, won a bunch of awards, and now has its own place on Stanton.

I could not resist the sign out front. Who wouldn’t want to taste the tzatziki rainbow? (By the way, Joe had to coach me through dinner on how to say tzatziki. I blame my inability to pronounce words on my midwestern heritage, but he wouldn’t take that excuse and by the end of the dinner I was pretty much able to spit it out.)

This place looks like a Greek villa inside. I kept expecting to look outside and see crystal blue waters instead of NYC streets. Very charming.

We got started with Brooklyn Lagers. I was going to go for a Greek beer, but the offerings were lighter and I’m not into light beers at all. So Brooklyn it was.

We each got a veggie souvlaki, which was basically warm pita stuffed with cucumber, onion, tomato, kalamata olives, and a ton of really delicious tzatziki.

Then we split the Greek fries, which were totally covered in feta and sprinkled with oregano. These were so good. I’m not even a fries person, but I would go back for these. The whole meal was exactly what we were looking for.

Definitely hitting up their food truck, and can’t wait to make it down to the restaurant again.

Woke up this morning to a text from a neighbor wanting to run and ended up doing around 5 at a pretty fast pace. (I don’t know how fast because I operate by the rule that when I’m running with others, if my Garmin doesn’t load by the time the other person is ready to go then NO GARMIN. But it felt fast.)

Now I’m looking forward to the rest of our Labor Day weekend festivities, which involve more friends and more food. Perfect.

  2. Two More Birthdays…

    April 12, 2011 by justgathering

What is it with April? So many birthdays!

Yesterday was Barbara’s birthday. My puppy is two years old! Hard to believe she used to look like this when now she’s so sophisticated and grown up…

To celebrate, she and Gully split a vegan dog treat from S’Nice in the West Village.

And then today is my baby sister’s birthday! Happy 22 years, lovely lady!

All these birthdays, and you think I’d be making more cake. I’ll see to that this weekend, for sure.

    Happy Tuesday, all!

  3. Birthday Drinks

    April 8, 2011 by justgathering

On Sunday, Daniel turned 26. I know, he’s old. I tell him that every day.

He’s one of those people who really doesn’t need anything, and if he wanted something he would buy it himself, so I was totally at a loss over what to give him for his birthday. In the end, I decided to go with experiences over possessions, and I’m so glad I did, because we had a fantastic day together.

We woke up in the morning and took the dogs to Central Park so we could watch our friend Jayme run the More/Fitness Magazine Half Marathon. Of course, we had to support with some signage.

Before we even spotted Jayme, we heard her. “Nice,” she said as she laughed and sped by.

Congrats to Jayme on her 1:50:00 finish! Now that’s nice.

We returned to the apartment and made our now-favorite weekend brunch of gluten-free blueberry pancakes. With almond butter and maple syrup, of course.

The first stop planned for Daniel’s surprise day was the NYC Vegetarian Food Festival. We got there, though, and the line was blocks long. We didn’t have time to wait before the real event of the day, so we grabbed some free KIND bars from the KIND truck and decided to walk from 18th Street down to Tribeca.

We got some coffees from Irving Farm on the way.

Thankfully, the sun came out and the day was gorgeous. Our walk was more of a ramble and lasted almost 2 hours. We stopped into a few shops, including a bike shop so we could dream about this summer’s wonderful bike rides.

We finally made it to our destination: New York Vintners for a Wine 101 Class. We were greeted and immediately given glasses of prosecco, a very good start.

The class was awesome. The guy who led it, Jesse, was really chill and the whole thing was as unpretentious as a wine class can possibly get. It was pretty much perfect for us, since we knew very little about wine going in. I still know very little about the wines discussed after the first twenty minutes or so, because I got a little tipsy thanks to all the tastings. Oops.

I definitely had to take advantage of the snacks provided, and that KIND bar came in pretty handy on the way home, too.

The class was really enjoyable, and I actually feel like I can talk about wine now and not feel like a total idiot. Daniel’s just glad I have some new wine vocabulary. He found it odd that I used to describe red wines as either “meaty” or “not meaty.” (Does anyone else know what I’m talking about here?)

Anyway, we took home a bottle of wine to have with our birthday dinner, and it was deliciously fruity. And decidedly not meaty.

Another very happy birthday to my darling. Here’s to many more celebrations together.

  4. A Winner!

    May 1, 2010 by justgathering

    Happy May Day!

First things first: I’m sure you all are eager to find out who won the cookbook giveaway I hosted to celebrate two years (!) of eatavegan. I won’t keep you waiting. Using the random number generator over at random.org, I came up with the lucky winner…

Comment #41: Rachel, the blogger behindĀ My Munchable Musings! Congrats, Rachel; you will soon be the proud owner of Sarah Kramer’s La Dolce Vegan!

This cookbook holds a very special place in my heart, because it was the first vegan cookbook I ever owned. My grandma gave it to me as a housewarming gift when I moved into my first apartment. Cuteness.

You’re probably sick of birthdays around here, but there’s one more coming up this week… mine! I’m celebrating by running my very first half marathon one week from today. I’ll be sure to post full details of the race and the subsequent party, at which there will be a gigantic vegan feast. :)

So, a bit of news… the aforementioned party is not just a birthday party (mine and my friend Eliott’s); it is also my going away party! That’s right. In two weeks, I’m moving back to Brooklyn.

(Find this lovely print on Etsy at [narchi]!)

The big move has been planned for several months, but I didn’t want to put the word out too soon because I wanted to focus on enjoying the rest of my time in Illinois.

I’ve always been a bit indecisive, so lately I’ve been making a conscious effort to make bold choices and own them. Moving back to New York is partially an exercise in taking control of my own life and making my own happiness. I have no idea where this adventure will take me, but that’s the fun of it. This life change will surely bring about some blog changes as well, and I hope you all are along for the ride… I know I am.

    *Excitement*
