  1. Short Races, Long Runs, and Divine Sandwiches

    September 18, 2011 by justgathering

Yesterday was the Fitness Mind, Body, and Spirit 4 Miler, a race for which I signed up quite a long time ago.

It was also 10 miles on my half marathon training plan. What to do? Run a 4 mile race in the middle of a 10 mile long run, of course.

I left my apartment around an hour before the start of the race and charted a course that took me downtown and around Central Park on the roads. I wound up at the start of the race with 4.6 miles down. I chatted with friends who were running it, ate a handful of sport beans, and took off for the speedier part of the long run.

This race was a little unorganized, but it was fun. I wasn’t taking it seriously at all, so I didn’t mind too much when a random lady tried to cross the road right in front of me as I sprinted toward the finish line. She probably minded when I body slammed her, but I’m pretty sure she was fine.

Official time: 34:22, a PR. I grabbed an apple on the way through the finish and kept on running for the last 1.4 miles. Then, with 10 miles under my belt, I wandered through the little expo with my lovely friend Amy and ate my free food.

    Delicious apple.

Yogurt, berries, and granola. Definitely a nice change of pace compared to the usual bagel.

I actually really liked running a short race in the middle of a longer run. It broke up the long run into manageable chunks, and it was a good mental exercise to pick up the pace for a few miles in the middle. I might start doing this more often.

Today was purely relaxing. Daniel and I joined Leslie at the Brooklyn Book Festival. We checked out all the book stalls, ogled some literary magazines and nonfiction anthologies, and successfully attended a ticketed reading (quite the feat, apparently).

We also ate some amazing food. Sandwiches from Tazza, where we ate on Labor Day.

Our experience there was just so good that we had to expose Leslie to the wonder that is Tazza. Daniel and I split two sandwiches again.

    Tomato, basil, and fresh mozzarella.

And roasted eggplant, red peppers, and goat cheese on focaccia.

Followed, of course, by ice cream. Blue Marble mint cookie, to be exact.

Not a bad weekend at all.

  2. Just Ate: Guac and Ice Cream

    May 9, 2011 by justgathering

Congrats to Sofia and BT for winning people’s choice at Guactacular 2011 with their amazing Indian-spiced guacamole!

The crowds obviously loved it. And it was my favorite by far.

Read Leslie’s recap of the event, and check out Megan’s thoughts too. Edited to add: Now you can read Sofia’s own post on the experience. So do that.

I followed my guac up with a double baby scoop from Brooklyn Farmacy: pistachio cardamom and mint chocolate chip. Lovely Sunday.

  3. Just Made: Greens, Beans, and Sausage Stew

    October 1, 2010 by justgathering

I’m not sure what to call the latest batch of food I’ve made, but I can tell you two things about it:

    1. It’s at once filling and warming, which, in October, is delightfully satisfying.
    2. It’s the perfect vehicle for consuming all the bread I’ve been baking. (Or would the bread be the vehicle for eating the stew? Either way, they make a wonderful pair.)

I used all-beef grass-fed smoked sausage from a farm upstate called Arcadian Pastures. They sell at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, in addition to some other NYC markets, and you can also order their products online. This was my very first meat purchase since I started adding more foods to my diet, and it was an awesome choice. I used half for this stew, and I used the other half on a pizza with pesto sauce… yum. Anyway, here’s the what I did to make this incredibly simple fall concoction:

    Greens, Beans, and Sausage Stew

    1/2 pound smoked sausage

1 medium-sized bunch collard greens (or kale, or another hearty green)

2 cups (cooked) white beans (or other bean of choice… kidney would probably be really good too)

    1 cup vegetable stock

    2 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 medium white onion, finely sliced

1 tablespoon canola or olive oil

    salt and pepper

1 tablespoon crushed red pepper (optional)

In a large skillet or pot, heat the oil and add the onions and garlic. Add the sausage and allow it to heat through for a minute, then add the stock and the greens. Cover and let simmer for ten minutes or so, until the greens cook down and absorb most of the stock. Add the beans last and cook just long enough for them to get hot but not mushy. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and add crushed red pepper if you like an extra kick. Eat with plenty of warm bread.

  4. The Best Egg

    September 16, 2010 by justgathering

On Sunday, I ate the best egg. Ever.

Though it was pouring rain, my friend Julia and I biked over to Brooklyn’s Farm City Fair to experience some music, art, and (most importantly) food of Brooklyn. The event was held in the Invisible Dog Art Center, an awesome art space in a converted factory building. (They hold all sorts of art classes there, and I think I might have to go back and try a few out!)

Flying wheatgrass people that change as they grow? Yes. Inside, there were tons of food and craft vendors, including an artist who was making french bread and goat cheese ice cream as a geographical-culinary “art project” and a guy who was selling a “garden in a bag,” which was essentially a sprouting kit.

Outside, the street was filled with even more amazing food and a pretty stellar marching band called the Asphalt Orchestra. Thankfully, the rain cleared up for most of the day, and the atmosphere was festive in a particularly autumnal way.

Almost every vendor was giving out samples, and nearly everything I tasted was fantastic. I have to say, though, that my favorite bite to eat came from Wylie Dufresne of wd~50 (and Top Chef) fame. He was serving up a slow-poached egg in a green tomato consume with smashed tomatoes, pickled carrots, and basil.

Simple, yet amazing. Probably the best egg I’ve ever had.

Speaking of eggs, I have plans to make mayonnaise later today… with a twist. If it works out, I’ll be posting pictures and recipe in a bit!
