  1. Paddy’s Day Greens and Vegan Ice Cream

    March 17, 2011 by justgathering

Happy Paddy’s Day, friends. My boss surprised me with a holiday gift this morning: green juice. (Love my job.)

Always prepared, of course, I packed my own greens as well. Spinach and kale with quinoa, red pepper, tofu and pumpkin seeds. A splash of Goddess dressing, a squirt of dijon, a drizzle of olive oil and bit of apple cider vinegar made this salad complete.

Have I ever mentioned that I, without fail, spill salad dressing in my purse at least a few times a month? The other day I went to yoga class in clothes that had been marinating in apple cider vinegar in my bag. I reeked. But I digress.

After yoga yesterday [read about latest 30 in 30 studio, YogaWorks], I had a little sweet treat: vegan ice cream from Lula’s Sweet Apothecary in the East Village.

I had mint chip, and it was the perfect afternoon snack, considering it was one of our most springlike days yet this year. I like that most of Lula’s ice creams are cashew- or coconut-based; it mean that it was not only tasty, but left my tummy feeling pretty happy as well. This place might be a new favorite…

My ice cream was also great fuel for a post-work 3 mile run, as well as the swing dancing class that Daniel and I attended last night. We got a deal through Living Social, and the class was fun and comfort zone-extending, which I think is a very good thing. We’ll be going back for a few more classes, and maybe by the end we’ll look coordinated enough to take some pictures for the blog.

  2. Crazy Sexy Cleanse Day 16: Kitchari

    March 8, 2011 by justgathering

I was out and about in the city today on a work-related adventure with Danielle, and we stopped into JivamukTea Cafe for lunch. Inspired by today’s article over at The Well Daily, I opted for the kitchari.

Kitchari means “mixture,” usually a mixture of one bean and one grain. It’s the staple food for many ayurvedic cleanses because it’s easy to digest. This particularly kitchari was made of red lentils and brown rice, and it was pretty tasty and mighty filling.

Later, we popped into Liquiteria for a little green juice fix. I had the Grasshopper, a veggie juice with mint.

Still going strong on this crazy sexy journey, and still feeling fabulous. Who knows? I might just keep going forever.

Nah. I miss coffee and beer.

  3. Crazy Sexy Cleanse Day 12: All Liquids, All Day

    March 4, 2011 by justgathering

Happy Friday! I’m spending the day juicing.

In Crazy Sexy Diet, Kris Carr recommends a few all liquid days during the 21-day cleanse. At the outset, I was not so into this idea. What about my ravenous hunger? I didn’t think I could make it through a green smoothie and green juice day.

Twelve days into this cleanse, however, I feel differently. The crazy hunger for which I am known is gone, whether that’s thanks to all the extra water I’m drinking or the fact that my food cravings were probably just my sugar addiction screaming at me. Or my insane marathon training schedule. Or a combination of these. The point is, I haven’t really been hungry on this cleanse. I’m getting much more of the nutrients my body needs, so my cravings have subsided. And I feel great. So I decided to go for it. One day, all liquids.

In preparation, I stopped by Liquiteria last night and picked up two juices. I make my own often, but theirs taste so delicious that I thought I’d incorporate them in as a treat. In addition to these juices, I made three smoothies packed full of protein and greens. So far, it’s 4 pm and I’ve had two smoothies, 1 juice, 2 cups of herbal tea, and lots of water. Status: feeling fantastic.

  4. Crazy Sexy Cleanse Day 5: Not-So-Green Juice

    February 25, 2011 by justgathering

Why are none of my greens green? I can’t explain this one, but today’s juice was rather brown.

    To Juice:

    1 very large cucumber

    3 small green apples

    3 large romaine leaves

    1/4 lemon

    1 inch piece of ginger

Sip happily at desk while working.

  5. Crazy Sexy Cleanse Day 1: Inaugural Green Juice

    February 21, 2011 by justgathering

Mmm, I made some tasty green juice for my mid-morning pick-me-up. It has been way too long since I juiced at home.

This lovely lady contained the following, which made two servings, one for me and one for Daniel:

    • the leaves of one large stalk of kale
    • one cucumber
    • three stalks of celery
    • one green apple

    That’s it. Delicious and nutritious.

I started feeling a little sick later in the day. I wanted to believe that it was the toxins leaving my body en masse already, but I think that would be a bit too quick. I’m now resigning myself to the fact that I am coming down with something. Hopefully all my super healthy food will help my body fight it off quickly… can’t hurt, right?

Anyway, because I was feeling not-so-hot, I didn’t have much of an appetite for the rest of the day. I had some nuts and a couple of brown rice cakes with almond butter and banana, and I had a salad with lots of veggies and a little bit of tempeh.

Hopefully all this green power has me springing out of bed in the morning, ready to conquer Day 2. Fingers crossed…
